Stavanger, Norway

Stavanger is Norway's fourth largest city and a firm favourite port for cruises to Norway and the fjords. Located in SW Norway, the city became rich from fishing, fish canning, shipbuilding and since the late 60s and early 70s, from oil. Cruise ships dock in the heart of the city which means you can explore the city on foot directly from the cruise terminal. No shuttle buses here.

Ships tie up opposite Gamle Stavanger (Old Town), a photogenic mix of white-painted timber houses, cobbled streets and narrow alleyways. This area is a must to explore, despite the challenges it poses to wheelchairs and baby buggies with its hills and cobbles. It is certainly worth it, it is believed to be Europe's largest concentration of surviving wooden houses. In the centre of Gamle Stavanger is the Canning Museum, and whilst this may not sound too interesting, it is one of the very best museums you can find. It also has a fabulous cafe and bar. More on this in another blog.

If you leave the ship and turn the other way, you walk into the newer part of town. If you are lucky enough to be there on market day, there are many stalls selling clothes and souvenirs. Beyond the market is Stavanger Cathedral, recently refurbished to its former glory. The stone cathedral has links to Winchester in the UK and St Swithun and dates from the 1100s. For a small fee you can enter the cathedral, it is well worth doing; the inside is hugely impressive, whilst remaining subtly understated.

Stavanger town centre contains a range of shops, many of which showcase Scandi design, with its unique mix of functionaility, minimalisim and a connection to nature. If you fancy a drink, head to Øvre Holmegate (also known as Fargegata, the Colour Street) where you will find many quirky and bohemian-style bars and coffee shops, set along a very colourful and pedestriansied street.

Stavanger also boasts the Norsk Oljemuseum (Norway Petroleum Museum), a fascinating museum dedicated to the local oil industry. Kids will love this, as will adults, it is easy to spend hours in this place. You also can't miss it, its forecourt is full of discarded oil industry equipment and has become an urban playground.

Stavanger is one of our favourite ports to explore, make sure you don't miss it.
